Scientists relive terrible wolves using old DNA and modern edition of genes

Three living wolves were born using reconstructed DNA. The extinct species had last traveled North America about 12,500 years ago. The milestone was achieved by a biotechnology company of Dallas that focuses on genetic conservation. Ancient DNA Fossilized remains samples were analyzed. The modern gene editing tools were used to imitate the key characteristics of the extinct predator. These puppies were brought to life implementing modified embryos on household replacement. The young wolves were named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi.

Old DNA edited in laboratory to recreate species

According to a to study Shared by colossal biosciences, DNA samples were collected from two old wolf fossils. One was a 13,000 -year -old tooth, while the other was a 72,000 -year skull fragment. These fragments were compared to the modern relatives of wolf and gray wolves were chosen to DNA change due to its evolutionary proximity. Genetic sequences which were found only on decreasing wolves were isolated. These were introduced into the DNA of the gray wolves through directed editing.

Cloning technique used to deploy embryos

The altered genetic material was inserted into gray wolf egg cells after removing its original nuclei. These prepared cells were placed inside domestic dogs. Each substitute received multiple embryos. Interestingly, only one embryo survived in each of the first two dogs. Both gave birth to caesarean section, while the third puppy was born in a second round of implantation.

Physical traits correspond to the fossil record

It was observed that the new puppies develop consistent characteristics with difficult wolves fossils known. Thick white coats, larger teeth and body structure were reported. These results came from the identification of changes in 14 genes. Gene editions were introduced using Crispr technology.

The same company had already cloned red wolves. The team also created “Woolly Rice” as part of a gigantic Renaissance effort. The successful terrible wolf marks a new phase in the restoration of gene-oriented species.
