The second release of Blue Origin’s new Rocket Glenn is being targeted for late spring as efforts are being made to improve their landing abilities. The 320 feet tall rocket was first released on January 16, 2025, from Florida’s Space Coast, successfully implementing a test version of the orbit Blue Ring Spacenave Blue Ring. However, the reinforcement stage failed to land on the recovery platform at sea. The company anticipated this possibility and since then has identified possible problems that affect the sequence of landing. Booster adjustments are being made in preparation for the next release.
Landing challenges identified and addressed
According to ReportsThe engines performed as expected during the descent, but the problems with fuel delivery of the tanks prevented a successful touchdown. Blue Origin Dave Limp’s executive director stated at the 27th Annual Commercial Space Conference that a combination of factors contributed to the failed landing. Although specific technical details have not been disclosed, it was mentioned that the modifications are being implemented in the second reinforcement. These changes are expected to improve landing success without delaying the next flight.
Service load for the second flight to be completed
The payload for the next release was not officially confirmed. Reports indicate that Blue Origin is considering several options, including possible commercial missions. If there is no proper useful load, the rocket can carry a mass simulator to test purposes. Limp mentioned that the first three flights of New Glenn are considered development missions, while commercial releases should start from the fourth flight onwards.
New skills of Glenn and future perspectives
New Glenn, developing for almost a decade, is designed to transport 50 tons of payload to the low orbit of the earth. Its service load fairing, measuring 23 feet in diameter, is larger than any operational rocket. The company intends to establish New Glenn as a competitive launch vehicle for commercial and government customers, with an emphasis on reuse and cost efficiency.
