An earthquake off the coast of Maine has shaken New England

A little shake-up hit the Northeast on Monday, with an earthquake centered off the coast of Maine giving folks a bit of a jolt. People felt light to moderate shaking not just in Maine, but also in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

The U.S. Geological Survey clocked the quake at a 3.8-magnitude, striking just before 10:30 a.m. ET. Its epicenter was located off York Harbor, Maine, about 45 miles southwest of Portland.

No need to worry, though! The National Weather Service hasn’t issued any tsunami warnings, and thankfully, there haven’t been any reports of injuries or major damage.

According to the USGS, there’s about a 15% chance we might feel at least one aftershock of 3.0 or higher in the next week, so keep your eyes peeled!

This quake was the strongest one recorded in the Northeast since April, when a 4.8-magnitude shake rattled near Lebanon, New Jersey. That one was the biggest tremor the region had seen in over a decade!

The USGS took to X (formerly Twitter) to remind everyone that while earthquakes here are pretty rare, they can happen along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Because quakes aren’t something we deal with often in the Northeast, even a small tremor can cause a bit more trouble than it would in places that are used to them.

The Maine Emergency Management Agency confirmed the morning quake in a post on X, encouraging anyone who felt the shaking to report their experience to the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program. If you felt it, don’t hesitate to share!
