Your phone supports a 320MP camera but companies choose to skip it

The smartphone industry has been through a brutal megapixel war in recent years, jumping to 48MP, 50MP, 64MP and 108MP cameras. Companies then increased ante in 2022 and 2023 by offering 200MP CameraAnd we have lived on this resolution since then.

Did you know that newer flagships Android phones actually support more than 200MP sensors? In fact, they support 320MP cameras. However, companies have not used 320MP cameras yet. Here’s the reason.

Wait, my phone supports 320MP cameras?

Yep, if you bought a High-end Android phone Over the past two years, there is a chance that it actually supports 320MP cameras. That’s because most chipmakers have now enabled 320MP support in their recent flagship processors.

This trend started with MediaTeks Dimensity 9000, which operated several Android phones in 2022. The Taiwanese chipmaker continued to offer this feature in the subsequent high-end socs. Meanwhile, Samsung’s Exynos 2400 also supports 320MP cameras. Qualcomm was late on the party and only jumped on this trend with today’s Snapdragon 8 elite Chip.

The biggest reason we haven’t actually seen phones with 320MP cameras is that there are simply no 320MP smartphone camera sensors on the market, but still from large suppliers. We have heard rumors for a while that Samsung Semiconductor is working on this technology, but there has been no announcement until now.

The good news is that Samsung previously stated that the final goal was to create a camera sensor that matched the resolution of the human eye (~ 600MP), so 320MP would be a springboard to get there.

It is also worth noting that the Chipmakers only offer rudimentary snapshot support for 320MP cameras at this stage. This means no image processing with multiple frames or other advanced tricks to spruce up the final image. History already shows us that full-resolution 200MP images do not necessarily look good, so I would expect 320MP images in full resolution will be in the same way underwhelming.

Still, it suggests that these big chipmakers all settled on a 320MP camera, strongly suggests that phones with these cameras will be a matter of “when” and not “if.”
