  • Gmail for Android tests a new “Read” button directly within the alerts, and allows users to manage the inbox without opening the app.
  • The feature appears to undergo the A/B testing with a small number of users, as it is not widely available despite being on the latest app version.
  • This potential supplement will bring Gmail’s Android app in line with the iOS counterpart and other e -post clients who already offer this practical shortcut.

If your e -mail insert is flooded with messages every day, it may be a task to go through all of them. One way to effectively cope with this influx is to mark some e -post messages like “reading”, keeping them in your inbox without distracting you from more important conditions. After all, you can often tell if an e -mail needs your immediate attention only from the sender, subject line and the first pair of lines in the message. Unfortunately, if you use Gmail for android And will notice an e -mail that read, you have to open the app, as there is no shortcut in the notice to do so. Fortunately, it may change soon.

Earlier today, the X user Kurt Gomez announced us that he saw a “Mark as Read” button in his Gmail notifications. He said the button just appeared to one of his accounts, and suggested that the feature is rolling out on account-by-account. He also confirmed that he is on the latest version of Gmail for Android, version 2025.06.15. I have the same version installed, but I don’t see the “Mark As Read” button for any of my accounts.

Besides our tipster, we have only seen another person reporting a “Mark as Read” button in Gmail. Another X user, Gilroy, too claimed To have the button, but did not share a screen or specify their app version. With so few reports, it is likely that Google is A/B to test the feature with a small group of users to measure engagement. This feature is likely to be popular, but as it is often found in other Android -E post apps and is already available in Gmail for iOS.

If you see the new “Mark As Read” button in your Gmail notifications, let us know in the comments below! If you don’t have the feature yet, try an app called Autonotification. It can replace Gmail’s warnings with customizes that include a “read” button.

Otherwise, you need to stick to the old methods to label an e -post that read. You can either open the e -post directly (from either the notification or inbox) or use a swipe movement, provided you have configured that action in Gmail’s settings.

Hopefully, Google will continue to add more quality of life features like this to the Gmail app for Android. While some of the new AI features in Gmail Am nice, I prefer a lot that the company works to implement the basics, as the ability to edit filters and labels.
