Tl; Dream
- Porous materials, including some teacher replacements, are prone to become moist and house the growth of mildew.
- The new Poco X7 Pro has a Colorway that includes just such an eco-leather panel on the back of the hand set.
- Over at Reddit, a new X7 Pro owner has shared a picture that seems to show mold that takes over the leather.
You don’t have to be a last of us fan to have a healthy fear of mushrooms, and anyone who has ever lived in a home infected with black mildew can witness how traumatic itself to see the first hint of it may be. And considering how often we touch our phones every day, keep them up against our faces, it’s about the worst we can imagine having a mold phone.
That is precisely why we feel some used discomfort when checking out the image shared by the Reddit by the user Get_kombination5430 Over on the site’s poco telephone rounds, which describe the fate of their new Poco X7 Pro:

The X7 Pro comes in a few color variants-green, yellow and black-and while the green and black options have a double textured plastic back, choosing the yellow version for a soft touch of eco-leather at the back.
The problem is that while materials such as metal, glass and even plastic are relatively non-porous, it is not necessarily the case with artificial leather that POCO uses here. There are many different ways to produce such materials, use polyurethane or even plant products, and depending on how it is done, these eco-lines can have the same type of porosity as natural leather. And just as real leather can get moist and mold, it seems to be what happens with the back of this X7 Pro.
We have heard of telephone cases that will be molded before, and although it is just as coarse, it is also a little easier to move on from – to dictate the case, give the phone’s hard surfaces one through disinfection and pick up a new (perhaps smaller porous) case. When it is your actual phone that has a small mushroom colony, the best way forward is not as clear.
Of course, prevention is often the best medicine, and you are probably much better with just avoiding a mold phone in the first place. It means thinking about material choices when making the buying decision, and just keeping the phone away from particularly moist and humid conditions whenever possible.
