The survey reveals how people are using camerazoom

Google Pixel 7 Pro Losses to focus in the camera app

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

Practically everyone Android phones Have preset zoom buttons in the camera app. Such as Google Pixel 9 Offers 0.5x, 1x and 2x levels while the Pro models have an extra button for 5x zoom thanks to the zoom camera Periscope.

These preset buttons are very practical, but it made me wonder about people’s camera -zoom habits. How many people only use these predefined buttons or always zoom freely via the slider? Or is it a mixture of the two? We posted one Poll Earlier this month, and here’s how you answered it.

Do you only use the preset zoom levels, or do you zoom freely?

More than 1100 votes were counted in this study. Almost half (47.43%) of all respondents said they were largely stuck with preset zoom buttons when using the telephone camera, but sometimes zoomed freely.

Reader Will Peck was one of these voters, and he outlined his reason in a comment:

I have a pixel and have the Zoom advance settings set for the individual cameras. Most of the time I only switch between them and only use pinch zoom when the ideal shoot falls between the lenses.

This approach makes sense as these preset buttons typically offer the best image quality and are easily accessible. However, there are times when you may want to prioritize framing rather than image quality, which necessitates a pinch. Furthermore, Google’s Pro Phones have good 10x pruned zoom but the camera app does not offer a 10x button on these devices. So you have to pinch or use the slider if you want a 10x shot.

Chaldon Pretorius also noted that he “generally” adhered to the preset zoom buttons:

I generally stick to the preset zoom levels because they are guaranteed to provide the best quality of the different zoom levels. The intermediate zoom levels between the preset are almost always poorer quality.

In addition to quality problems, reader Adrian Scarlett pointed out that preset zoom levels are often easier to use than the “bulky” slider. True enough, many Top camera phones Do not offer an easy way to use the zoom slider with one hand.

Meanwhile, ~ 26.6% of the readers examined that they always zoomed freely when they used their camera app. We saw no comments from readers who chose this option. We assume that these respondents valued the framing above all else, or simply did not know that the preset buttons generally offer the best image quality.

Finally, almost 26% of the users asked that they only used the pre -set zoom buttons for the camera. So we hope phone manufacturers offer more preset zoom buttons for the camera while improving interstitial zoom quality.
