- Google adds new expressive captions to Androids Live image text system.
- The list of expressive captions is expanded to include sounds such as whispering, sneezing, snoring, gurgles and more.
Last year, Google introduced Expressive captions as part of Android’s live caption system. Expressive captions not only show what is said in the sound, but also how it is said, and capturing elements such as tone, volume, environmental sounds and human sounds. The goal is to make sure that even if you can’t hear the sound, you can still feel its impact. Now it looks like Google is expanding the range of expressive captions available on Android devices that support live caption.

While digging around the latest version of Android System Intelligence (v.23.playstore.pixel9.74124583), we came across new expressive captions Google can be looking to add that live caption. The current expressive caption list includes the following expressions:
- Applause
- Cheer
- Clapping
- Cough
- Blubber
- Gasper
- Moan
- Laughter
- Music
- Piesing
- Sigh
- Snore
We have now discovered that this list is growing, with the following expressive captions added to the mixture:
- Whisper
- Whift
- Bells Ringing (Ambient Sound)
- Burps
- Gargle
- Hiccup
- Sneeze
- Snore
- Clear throat
- Yawn
So if you have live captions enabled on a device running Android 14 or later, you should soon start seeing these new expressive captions, provided the sound is drawn with them.
That said, the referenced to the Android System Intelligence version appears to be bound to a specific update on the Google Play Store, and targeted Pixel 9 devices. This suggests that the improved expressive captions can roll out to Pixel 9 phones first, before expanding to other pixel and Android phones.
