A major interruption on Saturday morning caused Unified Payment Interface Services (UPI) to stop working throughout India, affecting thousands of customers. UPI services on various platforms, such as Paytm, Phonepe, Google Pay, BHIM and more, have been interrupted due to this interruption. In addition, it also extended to major financial institutions such as HDFC Bank, India’s state bank, Kotak Maning Bank and more. Several users across the country reported that they could not negotiate using UPI. This also marks the fourth interruption of UPI services within a month.
UPI Services in India
According to the latest data available on the Downtor, more than 2,000 people reported the interruption. Users began reporting problems with UPI transactions around 11:26 am, which reached the peak at 1:02 pm. This happens days after India’s most widely used digital payment system suffered two major interruptions within a week.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has recognized this and has issued a statement about its official identifier X. The tweet says: “Currently, NPCI is facing intermittent technical problems, leading to partial declines of the UPI transaction. We are working to solve the problem and we will keep it updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”

UPI services suffer from multiple interruptions
This is the fourth time UPI services have been interrupted in the country. The first interruption was reported on March 26, 2025, when users from various UPI applications could not negotiate for more than three hours. The second major interruption took place on March 31. Users also reported problems due to payment processing problems, which NPCI clarified due to delays on the bank side during the end of the financial year. On the other hand, there was a brief interruption on April 2, 2025, due to the “latency in the UPI network”.
Several users complained about the interruption on the social media platform X. “I’m stuck at the airport with a late flight, a lost wallet with all my money and cards, and then I found that UPI was not accepting any payment either,” said one user. “Currently, UPI’s flaws are very often, leaving many people trapped. We trust her daily, but the system continues to fail us,” posted another X user.
