This first of its kind SmartWatch feature monitors your heart rate and if it sees a drop, smartwatches get to trigger an answer. Many European countries and the United Kingdom have been using this for several months now. However, it was not until March 2025 that Google received FDA approval for the feature.
Finally, today, Google rolls out loss of heart rate detection to Pixel Watch 3 in the United States. This makes one of Best smart watches You can buy even better.
To use this feature, you must sign up. Google has explicit instructions on how to do this on its Loss of support page for heart rate detection. Essentially, you need to update the personal security app on your watch and then turn on the Google Pixel Watch app feature on the connected smartphone. That’s it!
According to Google, a person with a loss of heart rate can go through any number of situations, such as “cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose or poisoning.” If your watch detects a loss in heart rate, it will go through a series of steps:
- Step 1: Your watch will vibrate to see if you need help. If you are doing well and this is a false positive, any movement will interrupt the alert.
- Step 2: If your watch does not experience any movement or heart rate after about 15 seconds, it will send out a high alert. If this is also a false positive, you can hit the red “X” on the watch screen to cancel the alert.
- Step 3: If your watch still does not feel a heart rate and about 30 seconds have passed, it will try to notify the emergency services. An automated message will provide your emergency and tell them that your heart rate has not been detected for any time.
Honestly, this feature can be the difference between life or death. When the pulse stops, there is a very limited window where your life can be saved and every second counts. With a Pixel Watch 3 on the wrist, you can give you the chance to get emergency treatment faster than without it.
