- Mediatek has announced Kompanio Ultra Chip for Chromebooks.
- The chip supports Gemini, but we have to wait for more details from Google next month.
- Otherwise, the new processor is effectively Dimensity 9400 flagship chip with a few changes.
Windows and Mac computers have received severe AI -Silicon in recent years but what about Chromebooks?? Fortunately, Mediatek has announced a new Chromebook chip with impressive AI skills and general performance.
Mediatek revealed his new Kompanio Ultra chip today, and it is effective Dimensity 9400 mobile chipset with a few small adjustments. Perhaps the most remarkable shared feature is the NPU 890 silicon for AI tasks, with the company that says it offers 50 peaks of performance. The company claimed that the AI performance is five times better than the one for Intel Core Ultra 5 125U (Meteor Lake) processor.
The company also confirmed in a media briefing that this Chromebook Plus chip supports GeminiBut added that we wanted to hear more about Gemini at Chromebooks at a Google event next month. For what it’s worth, Chromebooks already support features such as the ability to chat with Gemini from the shelf. Meanwhile, Chromebook PLUS models also get Additional AI features Like Live Translate, a recorder -app with automatic transcripts and speaker labels, and help me write functionality. Still, it sounds like Google has several Gemini-related features up the sleeve for Chromebooks with improved AI features.
Basically a dimensity 9400 in a chromebook

Kompanio Ultra is almost identical to the dimensitical chip on the CPU front, with a single Cortex-X925 at 3.62 GHz, three Cortex-X4 kernels and four Cortex-A720 cores. This is accompanied by the same 12MB L3 cache and 10MB system level cache as a mobile processor.
The most remarkable difference between the Chromebook chip and the Dimensity 9400 is GPU. We have the same Immortalis-G925 GPU, but in an 11-core configuration for Kompanio Ultra versus a 12-core part for Dimensity SOC.
Mediatek also used the Intel Core Ultra 5 125U chip as a comparison point for CPU and GPU performance. It required up to 18% faster single -thread performance in Geekbench 6.2 at half of the power (7W versus 15W). It also required 40% faster performance with more threads with the same power and 30% less power consumption at the same performance level. We take these figures with a pinch of salt, but this will definitely provide plenty of performance and power saving for a Chromebook.

When it comes to GPU performance, Kompanio Ultra apparently offers up to 40% faster performance in the GFXBench Manhattan 3.0 test. The processor has support support, but Mediatek warned that Chrome OS does not support it.
Mediatek also promises up to 20 hours of battery life, which is not a surprise to an arm chip. The company says you can expect up to 29% better battery life than Intel Core Ultra 5 115U when using the same 60Wh battery.
Other remarkable specifications include a second generation 3NM TSMC design, the ability to support two external 4K screens (as well as the internal screen), Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi 7 (up to 7.3 GBP’s downhill speeds), 4K/60FPS code and Low-codes and Low-coding Appreciation. Oddly enough, the fine printout in media marketing materials that Chrome OS does not support Bluetooth 6.0. So fingers crossed that Google brings support for more hardware development to the platform.
Interested in a Chromebook with Kompanio Ultra Chip? Mediatek says units with this new processor will be available in the “coming months.” So you may have a while to wait to get hold of these machines.
