- Last month we saw Google messages start working on a link invitation system for group chats.
- Although we are still not available for use, we can now access the sharing interface in development.
- Messages allow you to create divisible URLs and QR codes, which expire after 30 days.
Group chats are a great way to do everything from sharing gossip with friends, to coordinating family travel plans, to talking about what goes down in Yemen. And although they can easily begin to feel overwhelming at times, isn’t it just that much worse when we realize that a group chat happens without us? This is part of why we were so happy a couple of weeks back when we uncovered the work towards Google messages Get a practical new way to add people to a chat.
Ease APK Demolition Helps predict features that may come to a service in the future based on work code. However, it is possible that such predicted functions may not come to a public release.
What we saw was Google that began to add support in messages for Join a group chat via an invitation link. But while we identified a new “Join Link” activity in the app’s code, we did not have a good opinion at that time how this feature would actually be implemented in messages.
Today, we are finally starting to fill out these topics when we see how Google builds this coupling sharing interface. We analyze message version messages.android_20250331_02_rc00.phone.openbeta_dynamic, and while the screen is not functional yet, with this release, we can get the app to surface the link Invited interface:

As you can see, messages will be created an invitation link that you can either share directly as a URL, or reproduce as a QR code for a friend to easily scan. There is also an exchange that seems to distinguish between disposable links that only one single person will join your group chat, or reusable that can be distributed to anyone you want to join.
No matter which one you choose, links are set to expire automatically after 30 days. If someone ends up sharing a link and you notice a bunch of unwanted Randos who joins your chat, it looks like we also get the opportunity to be the Nuke links we have already issued.
With none of the buttons on this screen that are still functional, it can still be a little while before Group Chatviter links are ready to debut in messages, but we are happy to see Google make progress, the same. We will keep you informed of some further development work we can identify during this angle.
