  • YouTube used to fill empty space around full -screen videos with Black.
  • The app recently changed that behavior to render in a gray shade, instead.
  • It results in some strangely striped patterns for videos that already have built -in black bars.

Between landscape and portrait orientation, widescreen and 4: 3, and everything else along that spectrum, there are about a million and another form videos can enter. And since the screens we see on these clips are stuck in what shape they are, some of the time that will mean that things are not perfect. When that happens, you can either zoom in to fill the glossy space, or choose to embrace the empty property on the edges of the screen. YouTube Users on Android who walk the latter route have recently begun to notice some unexpected behavior.

Normally, there is a glossy space around a YouTube video that doesn’t fill your screen completely to black-just a plot, video-free void. But after a fresh update, users like Difysaro99 at the reddit and KrazyFrog,, Vedantkaloreand Cheeseco_ At X has complained that the glossy room that is now reproduced an intermediate gray shade.

Gray bars two of them

On your own there may be a neutral change, but the problem is really clear when you look at content that has already been composed with black bars on the pages that are now part of the video itself – with this new behavior from the app we get videos squeezed between pairs of grayscale and black bars. And it looks … not good. The behavior appears to be different from yOutube’s surrounding modeWhich intentionally fills dark areas of the screen with color for aesthetic purposes.

Google can actually agree that this is unwanted as we see an official Team YouTube X Account Reply to these reports:

We hear you. Confirms that we are aware of and are currently working to fix it. Appreciate your patience in the meantime

This message was shared two days ago, and now we still see this behavior from the app. We have reached Google in an attempt to learn a little more about what is happening here. Was this a intentional change that is only poorly received? Or did something go wrong behind the scenes?

We would also like to get some idea of when we can hope to see a black background coming back. So far we have not yet heard back, but we will be sure to update this post with everything Google has to share. So far, just try to find the silver liner in these gray rods.
