Bitcoin was one of the greatest winners of the changing political attitude towards cryptocurrency. Only a few weeks after Donald Trump beat Kamala Harris in the American presidential election, Bitcoin exceeded the historic $ 100,000 mark. However, like most of the best cryptocurrencies, its momentum has slowed down since the beginning of 2025.
Despite its previous earnings, Bitcoin experienced difficulties in the first quarter of 2025. Its performance of the year at the start of the year (YTD) is down 10.2%, with a drop of 2.71% in the last week.
Not everyone considers it a bad sign. Tom Lee, co-founder of Fustratt, remains optimistic. He thinks that Bitcoin will be the most efficient asset of this year, even going beyond gold. A daring prediction, but does it hold?
Bitcoin vs Gold: Who wins?
Gold experienced a solid 2024, increasing by 27.44%. But Bitcoin performed even better, raising 121.1% over the same period.
This year, the situation has reversed. Gold’s YTD growth is almost 13.7%, while Bitcoin dropped by 10.2%.
The slow start of Bitcoin has raised doubts about its ability to challenge gold as the most reliable value reserve. Despite this, Lee is convinced that Bitcoin exceeds Gold’s performance before the end of the year.
A month of acute swings
Bitcoin started 2025 to $ 93,536.41. In January, it increased by 9.54%, but in February, it dropped by 17.55%.
March was just as unpredictable. At the beginning of the month, Bitcoin was negotiated at $ 84,381.04. In the first two days, he jumped 11.68%, reaching $ 95,048.73 on March 2.
Since then, two major corrections have dropped the prices:
- March 3 saw an 8.5% drop
- Between March 6 and 10, Bitcoin lost another 13.25%
The market has not completely recovered from these setbacks. Currently, Bitcoin is at a price of $ 83,873, or 13.32% lower than this month.
Can Bitcoin reach $ 150,000 this year?
Tom Lee predicts that Bitcoin could reach $ 150,000 by the end of 2025. But should investors have to trust his forecasts?
His assessment with Bitcoin’s predictions was mixed, with successes and failures. However, as a co-founder of Fundstrat, one of the most respected financial research companies, his opinions have a significant weight.
It remains to be seen if Bitcoin bounces and surpasses gold. One thing is certain: 2025 is an exciting year for cryptographic investors.
As the battle between bitcoin and gold takes place, only time tells us which active really holds the crown.
