  • Google Maps has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to “America’s Gulf.”
  • The change of name is only visible if you live in the United States. Users in Mexico will still see the “MexicoGulfen.”
  • Users in other parts of the world will see both names.

Update 11 February 2025 (17:23 et): Companies everywhere strolls to respond to all the name changes that are being implemented by the Trump administration, with someone coming to them in front of others. Earlier today, we saw Google Maps implement the government’s remarking of the Gulf of Mexico as “America’s Gulf”, but noted that its peer Apple map had not yet followed after its own change. Now Mark Gurman on Bloom Confirms that Apple has also squeezed the name change.

Original article, February 11, 2025 (11:36 et): There has been a lot of chattering around naming a specific water mass lately. Right after the dedication, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to name the Gulf of Mexico to “America’s Gulf.” The change of name was made officially on February 9, and now it is live for all Google maps Users in the United States.

If you live in the United States, what used to be called the “Mexicogulfen” now marked as “America’s Gulf.” However, if you live outside the United States, You can still see the previous name (or both). Google Maps users in Mexico will continue to see the “MexicoGulfen”, while the rest of the world will see both names labeled as “Mexico Gulf (Gulf of America).” American users also look both names when zoomed out far enough, but the name of the New Gulf of America takes over as you zoom more closely.

The change of name will take time to get used to, and Google seems well aware of this. If you live in the US and seek “Mexico Gulf”, you will still see the site information for the area instead of an error message.

Google first detailed their plans To rename the MexicoGulfen a few weeks ago, explaining that it updates place names in Google Maps when there is a change in the geographical name information system (rub).

When we check in the end, Gulf of America Reiam is live for Google Maps Android and iOS apps and the Google Maps Desktop website. Interestingly, Apple Maps still shows the previous name Mexicogulf.

Will Gulf of America’s new name hold? Will other bodies of water be renamed later this year? Follow the Gulf Authority for all your maritime coverage.
