Take part in the large garden bird count this weekend. The goal: to monitor the development of the most common bird populations with the inclusion of the Lotois.
The garden bird observatory is now the most important participatory science system in France in which the general public is involved. The league for the protection of the birds (LPO) meets on January 25th and 26th with the French to observe birds in their gardens, balconies or in public parks. This large national count, which has been taking place twice a year since 2012, is one of the most important participatory science initiatives in France. Every observation enables scientists to follow the development of the most common bird populations.
To participate, you don’t have to be an expert! Simply select a place, observe for an hour, write down the identified species and the maximum number of individuals seen at the same time and then transfer the data to the location oiseauxdesjardins.fr. In order to facilitate beginners to recognize birds, description sheets are available.
All eyes are directed at the stone core biteers
During the edition in January 2024, 17,033 participants recorded more than 547,000 birds. Also this year, well -known species such as the house sparrow, the blue trip or the robin should be the focus. However, all eyes will also be directed on the stones of core biteers, the sightings of which have increased since autumn and are reminiscent of the massive influx in winter 2017/2018.
This friendly and useful event, which is organized together with the National Museum for Natural History and the French Office for Biodiversity, is a great opportunity to discover the local biodiversity and at the same time contribute to its preservation.
